Raptor – The Flight of the Creature
Raptor is one of Gardaland's most acclaimed and iconic attractions. Launched in 2011 with an investment of approximately €20 million, it remains the only Wing Coaster in Italy. Since its opening day, over 18 million riders have braved its flight.
What is a Wing Coaster?
The term "Wing Coaster" refers to the unique seating arrangement: instead of sitting above or below the track, riders are positioned in pairs on either side of the steel rail—like the wings of a plane. With nothing but air above and below you, your feet dangle freely as you soar.
This design allows the train to pass through "near-miss" obstacles with razor-thin margins. Raptor takes this to the extreme, featuring 6 specialized scenery elements that the train appears to dodge at the very last second.
The sensation is unlike any other coaster in the park. It's not the vertical drop of Oblivion or the classic loop of Blue Tornado; it's something closer to free flight: unstable, sweeping, and unpredictable.
The Theme: A Creature Awakened
Raptor boasts some of the most detailed storytelling in Gardaland. The narrative, developed over two years, tells the story of an unknown winged creature awakened from deep underground during the park's construction. Now, it's on a relentless rampage across the land.
The train itself represents the creature, and riders are its "victims", snatched up and dragged through a devastated landscape. The surrounding area is meticulously themed with a 950sqm "bio-lake" swamp, gnarled trees, shattered watchtowers, and jagged rocks that you'll miss by just inches during the flight.
The Raptor Flight Path
The track stretches over 770 meters with a ride time of about 1 minute and 30 seconds, featuring 3 inversions packed into the second half of the circuit.
- The Lift Hill: The train climbs to 33 meters before plunging down a 65-degree main drop, reaching speeds of 90 km/h and soaring directly over the pedestrian paths of the park's West area.
- Near-Miss Elements: From the first turn, the "near-miss" effects kick in. You'll weave through structures and rocks, experiencing a heart-pounding sensation of imminent impact that is averted at the last possible moment.
- Zero-G Roll: The first inversion is a Zero-G Roll, where the train performs a complete rotation while neutralizing the force of gravity. For a few seconds, you'll feel completely weightless.
- Flat Spin: The second inversion provides intense lateral G-forces as the train twists on its axis—a physically demanding element that feels very different from a standard loop.
- In-Line Roll: The final inversion is a longitudinal rotation that corkscrews the train along the track, bringing the high-speed mission to a dramatic close before returning to the station.
The ride pulls a maximum force of approximately 4G.

Raptor vs. The Other Titans
Raptor holds a unique spot in Gardaland's "Big Three":
- Vs. Oblivion: Oblivion is a "one-hit wonder" (in the best way possible), focusing on the psychological terror of the vertical drop. Raptor, however, sustains the adrenaline for the full 90 seconds through its "near-miss" effects and constant banking.
- Vs. Blue Tornado: While both feature dangling feet, Blue Tornado is an inverted coaster (seats under the track). Raptor's wing-style seating offers a much higher sense of lateral exposure and vulnerability.
Is Raptor Right for You?
Raptor is best suited for seasoned riders looking for a complex, atmospheric experience. Because of its unique lateral forces and the intensity of the near-miss elements, it's often recommended to "warm up" on Blue Tornado before taking on the creature.
Access Requirements:
- Minimum Height: 140 cm
- Maximum Height: 195 cm
- Safety Restrictions: Not suitable for pregnant women or individuals with heart, back, or neck issues.
Practical Tips
- When to Ride: As one of the park's headliners, Raptor attracts long lines. Your best bet is to ride within the first 30 minutes of park opening or during the late afternoon.
- Where to Sit: For the most extreme "near-miss" experience, aim for the outer seats. They offer the most intense sensation of flight and the closest encounters with the scenery. The inner seats provide a slightly more stable, balanced perspective of the layout.
